Ambition

A Vibrant New Neighbourhood

Winstanley and York Road Estate is severed from its surroundings by lack of physical permeability and social integration. Poor health, lack of safety and sub-standard quality of living created an uninviting environment.

With the support of the diverse community of residents, the ambition is to revolutionise this degraded and car-dominated landscape, delivering an integrated, healthy and vibrant new neighbourhood.

Impact

A Healthy New Place

The new masterplan promotes health through a greener, ecologically mindful and connected environment.

A Landscape Led Exemplar

The regeneration of Winstanley and York Road Estate provides an exemplar scheme for landscape led, sustainable developments. It promotes holistic approaches to much needed green space and affordable housing in densely populated urban areas.

Approach

Supporting Wellbeing

York Gardens Park is integral to the promotion of wellbeing, offering quality open space and a diverse range of play and exercise opportunities. No activity or group is secluded or placed ‘in a corner’ and so interaction and integration is encouraged.

Permeability and Legibility

The new masterplan encourages walking and cycling through well-lit, safe and pedestrian priority streets.

Environmental Sustainability

With water management and enhanced biodiversity, York Gardens Park is designed as a sustainable landscape that will withstand changes in climate.

Community Engagement

Designed for and by the People

The success of the project hinges on strong liaison with the existing community to garner residents’ trust and engagement during the decade long construction period.

The construction process creates opportunities for skills training and employment, both on-site and in the surrounding Borough. Community activities and commercial ventures will enhance social cohesion, enable growth and create jobs. We proposed a temporary ‘Skills & Community Hub’, which would serve as a base for information, skills training, and community activities during construction.
